IPSWICH Y.M. RUGBY CLUB
SUMMARY OF THE CLUBS HISTORY

In 1925 Arthur Davies took charge of Rugby at the Municipal Secondary School (now Northgate High) and foresaw the problem of school leavers wishing to continue the game. This was discussed with Bernard Brown at the Y.M.C.A. which in those days was situated in Tavern Street.

Some seven members who had played Rugby were found and together with another eight volunteers' coaching and training commenced in February at the Old King's Field (Park Road area).
During 1925 - 26 a few fixtures were played against clubs within reach eg, Norwich, Sudbury and service teams eg, HMS Ganges, RAF Felixstowe and Martlesham.

Soon ex-school boys were joining the club and in the 1930's an 'A' Team was formed. In these early days visiting teams changed at the Y.M.C.A. which had moved to Princes Street and then proceeded to Kingsfield.

In 1934 the ground was moved to Bourne End and the club continued to prosper until the war years depleted the number of players available causing the formation in 1940 of the “Bourne End Club". A collection of civilian and service players including Internationals from all four home unions supported by talent from the Y.M.C.A. and Ipswich Clubs.

This continued for some two seasons with high quality opponents such as the Australian Services, New Zealand Navy and other regimental representative sides until the services moved from the area and the club petered out until August, 1945 with the end of hostilities.

This coincided with a further move by the Y.M.C.A. to Lower Brook Street with the ground again at Bourne End. In those days the Ipswich Club also used a pitch on the site before their move to Humberdoucy Lane. Therefore in December, 1945 a XV played its first game against HMS Woolverstone, a Naval Establishment on the site of the present school.

Season 1946/47 saw a tremendous impetus in playing strength the 1st XV wearing the original strip of maroon shirts with a single gold band whilst the 'A's had a new strip of alternate maroon and gold bands (which remains the club colours to date).

By 1947/48 the 1st XV were playing some 26 games a season with again an influx of well coached players from the local school leavers as well as one DL. Sanders' who joined the National Service in the Navy and who has gone on from the Y.M.C.A. to represent England nine times with one of his shirts proudly kept in the club house to date.

It was in this era that a Pavilion was erected to give changing facilities at Bourne End with after match entertainment being found at local hostelries. (These were the facilities for some years making a new brick built club house was opened in March, 1975).

In the 1950's the club continued to flourish with four sides being run and besides the aforementioned DL. Sanders' Eastern Counties Caps were awarded to three Y.M.C.A. players whilst Suffolk sides were known to contain no less than eleven year players at one time.
In the 1960's a Colts Side was formed with notable help from St. Josephs, Copleston and especially Northgate which has retained its close links with the club.

Throughout the 70's and 80's Rugby continued at Bourne End until 1988 when the ground was sold to finance building work at the Y.M.C.A in Norwich Road. At this time the club were still flourishing with four Senior Sides and a Colts XV.

However the move to Rushmere did not coincide with a new club house and the subsequent lack of social activities saw several Senior players leave in one season. This reversal in the clubs fortunes saw the 1st XV drop from London N.E. Division three to Eastern Counties three, a drop of four Divisions in corresponding seasons.

However the club has now built up to three senior Sides, a veterans XV and has climbed back to Eastern Counties two, which is the division they remained in at mid-table position in season 1992-93.
