In contrast to the previous weeks of challenging weather, the sun shone for most of YM's visit to Mistley. Even the wind had dropped to a more moderate level.
This made for an afternoon of good rugby which was enjoyed by both teams.
However, on the day of the game, YM suffered a number of drop-outs and no-shows to their already skeleton team.
Fortunately this shortfall was made up at short notice by players that were either home from University or were junior (ex-Hawks) first team players who were keen for a game.
One notable addition to the team was hooker Darren Sawyer who played his first game for 12 years!
YM started brightly and scored the first try within the opening minutes only for Mistley to respond with one of their own immediately afterwards.
This continued to be the theme of the first half with never more than two scores separating the sides.
As the second half progressed, YM became increasingly dominant by utilising their quick backs to rack up several unanswered trys. Full credit to Mistley who never gave up and were always a threat, especially when using their forwards to drive the ball over the line.
On reflection, the score possibly flatters YM but this was an afternoon when grass-roots rugby was the real winner.
