YM Hawks Do The Double Over Local Rivals Ipswich
By Brent Austin
On a rather stop-start season, YM produce the important result to gain bragging rights
Due to the number of games being payed at Ipswich RFC, the kick off was was brought forward to 1:00 pm to ease the contention on the facilities at Humber coucy Lane.
However, this caused some of the YM players problems as they had work commitments in the morning. Rather sportingly, the Referee and Ipswich agreed to delay the kick off until YM had 15 players.
The game kicked off with YM playing into a strong wind which was blowing directly down the pitch. The tactics for this half would be to contain Ipswich as much as possible and to launch breakaway runs whenever the opportunity arose.
This game play proved to be sucessful and whilst Ipswich were proving to be stiffer opposition than they were at the previous reverse fixture at YM, Ipswich finished the first half only two scores ahead.
In the second half YM changed their game to utilise their quick backs as much as possible. The forwards were securing the ball and then the ball was either passed to the backs to run from a deep position or kicked through for them to chase onto.
Although the wind was helping YM, the scoreboard wasn't ticking over as quickly as they would have liked and they had to be patient in finding the final try to finish the game 15-19 to YM.
A big thank you to Ipswich RFC for playing the game in a sporting manner, particularly when they backed up YM's query with one of the ref's decisions.
Also thanks to Jeremy who turned out for his first game for YM.
