by scoring three unanswered tries in a hard fought game

Perfect conditions and a large crowd saw the YM take on Woodbridge at Rushmere. As soon as the game kicked off both teams were set for a tough encounter and it was clear that both teams were looking for the win.

The first half saw YM beong very dominant in the scrums with Woodbridge showing a slight advantage in the back line. The scoring was to and fro between the teams with possession 50:50 throughout the first half. The YM were the only team to score a try with Barney Horsfield finishing off a great back move, he didn’t manage to convert his own try but Woodbridge led at half time with three kicked penalties nicely slotted over by their fullback.
Half time score 5-9.

The second half continued much as the first with the first score coming from the Woodbridge fullback, with another penalty from a YM infringement. More strong scrummaging from the YM led to them scoring their second try from Jamie Everson in the corner, the conversion was missed so half way through the second half still saw Woodbridge in front 10-12.
With just 5 minutes to go another penalty was given away by the YM and this allowed Woodbridge to slot another one over, giving them a 5 point cushion.

Woodbridge continued to push to seal the game but they knocked on in near the centre of the pitch, the YM back row pounced on the ball and the counter attack saw the ball sent to Everson on the wing who broke the line. This break-through led to Ryan “Woody” Wood touching down over the line. Barney then converted to give the YM a 17-15 lead.

Woodbridge were not finished and charged back at the YM from the kick off. A YM offside gave Woodbridge a chance to win the game with a penalty kick. The kick was missed but the YM failed to clear their lines, somehow this ended up with yet another penalty attempt for Woodbridge with seconds left on the clock.
This kick came up short and this time the YM did clear their lines, which led to the final whistle.
A great game from two evenly matched teams ending with a very tense final 5 minutes.

Final score YM 17 – Woodbridge 15.
