A large crowd at Rushmere saw a mismatch of rugby, the YM defeating their visitors with nineteen unanswered tries in one of the most one-sided matches seen here for a long time. Both sides were weakened by injuries and thankfully this match finished without either side adding to it's long injury list.
Matches like this do little for either side; the only satisfaction allowed to the winners was in maintaining their dominant top-of-the-table position and to the losers the knowledge of having played the entire game with spirit and determination, never giving up, despite the score. An opportunity to concede the match after 60 minutes was declined by Mistley, by which stage their hosts had already scored 100 points, and they showed commendable courage and grit to play out the remainder of the fixture.
The result was in no doubt after only five minutes, by which time the YM were two tries to the good and scoring their fourth bonus point try after fifteen. But it takes two sides to make a rugby match and Mistley were determined to play their part. Their pack was the first one this season that the YM have not been able to push around at will and they even drove their hosts’ eight back on one or two occasions.
Once the YM moved the ball wide though, their pacy backs and fitter forwards were able to find gaps and recycle the ball swiftly, scoring almost at will with tries coming regularly and frequently throughout the match. Kasselle Lee again picked up a couple, centre Ash Lacey a hat-trick and winger Alex Powys no fewer than five.
Tougher tests still await the YM, for which a result like this is scant preparation but they will meet few opponents who play a losing match like this with such gameness.
